Summary: The Gibson SG went through a rather major redesign in 1972, moving away from the vibrola tailpiece that had been with the model since the beginning and replacing it with a new "wide-travel" version of the Tune-O-Matic bridge, going back to the "Small Guard" looks of the first run, and adding the infamous volute at the rear of the headstock which was supposed to decrease the likeliness of headstock breaks. This 1978 SG Standard is fine vintage condition. The bridge pickup has been swapped to a Gibson ’57 Classic. The control knobs have been changed with correct speed knobs.

Body: Mahogany with a Cherry finish.

Neck: Mahogany with a Rosewood fingerboard, 24.75” scale length, 1 9/16” nut width, 22 frets, pearl block inlays.

Pickups/Hardware: One original humbucker in the neck position, ’57 Classic in the bridge position, Grover tuning keys, harmonica style bridge/stop bar tailpiece, 2x volume/2x tone controls/3-way pickup selector.

Cosmetics: This guitar is good vintage condition. There are two small cracks on the back of the headstock from someone tightening the screws a little too tight. These are both still structurally sound and do not go all the way through the wood. This guitar has various nicks, dings, and scratches throughout. The pickguard has regular wear. The back of the neck has some of the finish worn off (See Photos Please). There is some buckle rash on the back of the body. The frets on this guitar have a good bit of wear but it still plays well. This guitar has wear that is consistent with a vintage instrument but it still plays and sounds fantastic.

Playability: Our in-house guitar tech has inspected, setup, and restrung this instrument with a new set of strings. The neck is straight, the truss rod is fully functional, and the action has been setup low and comfortable. The frets are in great shape with no major grooves or divots from use and it plays beautifully up and down the fretboard with no dead spots or choking out.

Modifications: The bridge pickup has been changed out to a Gibson ’57 Classic and the control knobs are not original but correct for this time period.

Weight: 7.425 lbs.

Case: This guitar ships in a hard-shell case, professionally packaged, and fully insured.
